Byers Family Reunion to worship at Shady Grove

Rev. Hazel Logan Sr. will be the guest speaker for the Byers Family Reunion at Shady Grove Baptist Church on Sunday, July 12, at 11:00 a.m.

Rev. Logan is the Associate Pastor of St. Peter Missionary Baptist Church in Grover, N.C., under Senior Pastor William Thompson. He completed theological and seminary studies through the Gaston Baptist Association and was ordained in 1996.

Everyone is cordially invited to attend this service.

Graduates, student achievers to be honored

Shady Grove Baptist Church will honor 2015 Graduates and 4th Nine Weeks Outstanding Students Sunday, July 12th, during the 11:00 a.m. worship service. Graduates and their parents will be recognized.

The Education Committee is coordinating the event and will provide awards for each student honored.

It is with much regret we report that Rev. London C. Knuckles passed earlier today. He has gone to join his wife and Holy Father in Heaven. Please pray for his earthly family and the Shady Grove Baptist Church family. We’ll post more information as it becomes available.

Phillips to speak for Father’s Day Service

Minister Al Phillips, Associate Minister at Shady Grove will speak during the church’s annual Father’s Day Service Sunday June 21st during the 11:00 a.m. worship service. The program theme is: “Looking for a Few Good Men” – The Challenge to be a Man of God.”

Minister Phillips has served in the Shady Grove vineyard including the Sunday School, Van Ministry, Usher Ministry, Evangelism Ministry, Armor Bearer Ministry, Sound/Video Ministry, Trustee Ministry, and was ordained into the Deacons Ministry in 2012.

Phillips initially ministered to the community through his work as a medical technician, personal trainer, bodybuilder, and fitness instructor. He shared the word of God in neighborhoods, at church activities, association programs, and town hall events speaking in churches to youth and civic groups emphasizing that our bodies are the temples of God.

He is married to Hyacinth Jones Phillips and they have two daughters, Skyla Grace and Jaila Brianna Phillips. He attended Anderson College (University), and served as a decorated United States Marine during Operation Desert Storm in Iraq. Al is the son of the Late Albert and Shirley Goodman.

The Shady Grove Men’s Ministry will be in charge of the Father’s Day worship service. All fathers will receive special recognition.

Trustee Thompson receives Humanitarian Award

Jay Thompson, a Trustee at Shady Grove Baptist Church, recently received ‘The Humanitarian Award.’

Thompson was cited for his commitment to the church. In presenting the award, Senior Missionary Ministry President Dorothy Manning stated that Thompson takes seriously his responsibilities and continually exercises oversight and care of the church’s properties, buildings, grounds, and equipment.

She indicated that he daily monitors to assure that all is well and exemplifies extreme love and concern for his church.

The Senior Missionary Ministry presents this award annually to a deserving and committed person who shows extreme commitment and concern for the church, or for individuals who are sick and /or in need in the community.

Last year’s Humanitarian Award winner was Deaconess Kathy Byers.

Pastors to speak on ‘Whole Armor of God’ May 31st

The Pulpit Aid Ministry of Shady Grove Baptist Church will present a program, “The Whole Armor of God” on Sunday, May 31, 2015 at 3:00 p.m.

Each speaker ‘s choir will give a short musical selection before they speak.

Praise Singers to celebrate 36th anniversary June 7

The Shady Grove Praise Singers will celebrate their 36th anniversary with a reunion Sunday, June 7, at 4:00 p.m. Former Praise Singers and Friends of the choir are invited back to be a part of this event. For more information, former Praise Singers should contact choir president Bridget Rainey (864-490-7673) or assistant director Hyacinth Phillips(864-490-0268), or any other Praise Singer.

The renowned JOYLITES of Gaffney will be the special guest for this program. Everyone is cordially invited to come and be a part of this dynamic event. The JOYLITES are a family group and most have been singing since old enough to hold a microphone. The group is backed up by a keyboardist, two guitarists, and a drummer. The group released their first CD recently. The JOYLITES love the Lord and are a singing machine, booked months in advance for their many performances. The public is invited to come and be part of this event.

Shady Grove Baptist Church Education Committee recognized and presented awards to students with outstanding achievement during a recent church service. Pictured are students who performed in an outstanding manner during the 3rd Nine weeks at their respective schools.

Coleman will speak at NAACP dinner

Jeff Coleman a former renowned football player, will be one of the speakers at the NAACP Black History Forum and Dinner on Monday March 23rd at Allen Temple Methodist Church at 6:00 p.m.

The complimentary meal will be served at 6:00-6:45, and the forum will begin at 7:00 p.m. Coleman and William Manning will share personal scenarios and challenges encountered as they traveled the ‘Road to Success’.

Coleman is the Assistant Vice President, Customer & Programs and Relationship Management with Wells Fargo Home Mortgage. He is also an Assistant Vice President and Business Initiatives Consultant covering the West Region for Wells Fargo Home Mortgage.

In his role with Customer & Community Programs and Relationship Management, Coleman’s primary focus is to plan, develop, and execute programs that assist customers’ home ownership needs, while improving and strengthening communities.

Coleman is a a 1994 graduate of Gaffney High School and almunus of the University of Tennessee with a bachelor’s degree in Urban Planning.

The program coordinator is Ms. Mary Edwards.

Will Manning to speak at NAACP dinner

William Manning, a 1993 graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, will be one of the speakers at the NAACP Black History Forum and Dinner on Monday March 23rd at Allen Temple Methodist Church at 6:00 p.m. The complimentary meal will be served at 6:00-6:45, and the forum will begin at 7:00 p.m. Jeff Coleman, a renowned former football player will also speak on the forum. Both will share personal scenarios and challenges encountered as they travel the ‘Road to Success’.

Manning is currently the Senior Vice President of Global Commercial Banking at the Bank of America in Charlotte. He joined Bank of America in 2006 as a Program Manager in Global Wealth & Investment Management. For two years, he served as the Military Segment Sales Executive and as a Customer Experience Executive in the Community North and Southeast Regions. He moved to his current position in June 2013.

In addition to his current position, Manning serves on the Board of the United Service Organization (USO) of NC providing health and human services to troops and their families, and as the Charlotte lead for the Military Affairs Advisory Council advising the bank’s executive leadership team. A recurring speaker and mentor, and for his ongoing work, Manning was selected as a 2012 recipient of Bank of America’s Global Diversity & Inclusion award, among numerous global nominees.

Manning has served with distinction as a Combat Engineer officer in the US Army for five years, an Airborne Ranger, a Master Parachutist in the Army’s famed 82nd Airborne Division, and a Six Sigma Black Belt and Product Marketing Manager for General Electric in Atlanta for five years (holding high Six Sigma certification to implement an improvement system to develop new processes or products at Six Sigma quality levels – define, measure, analyze, improve, control).

Manning is a graduate of Gaffney High School, West Point Military Academy (majoring in Mathematics and Electrical Engineering), a former member of Shady Grove Baptist church, and the son of Deacon and Mrs. Eugene and Dorothy Manning of Gaffney. William and his wife Sonja have three children and live in Charlotte, NC.
