Guest speaker for ‘Pink Sunday’ observance

Minister Juanita Dewberry will be the guest speaker for the Shady Grove Baptist Church ‘Cancer and Pink Sunday’ observance October 19, 2014 during the 11:00 a.m. worship service. Minister Dewberry is an Associate of Limestone Baptist Church, where Rev. Michael Golden is pastor. She was licensed to preach in March 2005, and continues to exercise her gifts and carry forth God’s word.

Minister Dewberry is a kingdom builder serving as president of ‘My Sister’s Keeper Ministry’, Ladies Bible Study teacher, and assist with the Sunday School ministry. According to Minister Dewberry, “She loves studying for her sermons and keeps God’s word and a sermon on her heart and one in her pocket”.

She is married to Deacon Chris Dewberry and they have two children and four grandchildren.

The Shady Grove Senior Missionary and Women’s Ministry will be in charge of the service. All cancer survivors will be recognized and ladies and men are asked to wear some pink, or all pink for this observance. To support the American Cancer Society and its efforts, a special donation will be taken on October 19th and 26th.

Following the service, a repast will be held in the Rev. London C. Knuckles Fellowship Hall featuring salads, pink cake, and pink lemonade. Everyone is cordially invited to attend.

Phillips to preach initial sermon Aug. 31

The Shady Grove Church Family would like to announce the initial sermon of Dea. Al Phillips on Sunday, August 31st, at 4:00 p.m.

Dea. Phillips has spread the ‘Good News’ at Shady Grove and beyond. He has served in various organizations at the church, including the Sunday School, Van Ministry, Usher Ministry, Evangelism Ministry, Sound/Video Ministry and Trustee Ministry. He was ordained as a deacon in 2012.

He is married to Hyacinth Jones Phillips and they have two daughters, Skyla Grace and Jalia Breanna.

Everyone is cordially invited to attend this wonderful occasion.

Profiles for August revival speakers

The Shady Grove Baptist Church will observe its annual Homecoming Service Sunday August 17th at 11: 00 a.m., and Revival Services Monday through Wednesday August18-20, beginning at 7:00 p.m. nightly. This year’s revival theme is: “Making Preparation for Elevation”.

The speaker for the Sunday, August 17th Homecoming Service will Rev. Jacob Cleo Hunter, Associate Minister at Island Creek Baptist Church.

A Homecoming dinner will be served following morning worship.

Monday, August 18th, the speaker will be Dr. M. K. McDaniel, a passionate preacher and teacher of the gospel serves as the pastor of the 1,300-member Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church located in Spartanburg, SC. Dr. McDaniel’s ministry distinctively promotes reconciliation and redemption in such a way that lives are transformed by the power and mercy found in God’s word.

Dr. McDaniel completed his pastoral studies at Rex Hospital in Raleigh, NC.  There he served as a Chaplin in the Urban Ministries department of Pastoral Care.  Much of his work focused on ministering to families in financial crisis and homeless men. He has been afforded the opportunity to preach and gives lectures at churches, colleges and universities throughout the country.

In 2011 Dr. McDaniel completed his first written work. Live Your Kingdom Life Now: A Theological Guide To Living By Choice Not By Chance and in 2014 he completed his second written work; If God Be For Us: Pastoral Reflections of Faith and Family Concerning the Black Church. Dr. McDaniel is an honor graduate of Shaw University where he majored in Religion and Philosophy and minored in business management.  He continued graduate and post graduate studies at Duke Divinity School, Durham, NC and at United Theological Seminary in Dayton, Ohio receiving a Master of Divinity degree and a Doctor of Ministry degree respectively. In 2007 Pastor McDaniel was invited to Harvard University to participate in a program that focused on economic development and community revitalization.

He currently serves as Secretary of Spartanburg County Baptist Association, is a founding member and Chairman of the Board of Directors for the Spartanburg Village Network. He is also a proud member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc.
A native of Winston Salem, N.C. he is a man who loves God and his family.  He is married to Latron McDaniel and the proud father of four beautiful children: Marceo Keith Jr., Madison, Savion, and Kensley.

His favorite scripture is Romans 8:38-39 “For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

Tuesday, August 19th, the speaker will be Dr. Walter R. Belton, Senior Pastor of the St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church of Spartanburg, SC.

Rev. Walter R. Belton is a native of Ridgeway, S.C. and has served as pastor of St. Paul Baptist Church for seven years. He received his formal education in the public school system and continued his education at the Professional Training Institute, Midlands Technical Center in 1993, the Christian Life School of Theology in 2000, and the Interdenominational Theological Seminary in Atlanta in 2009. Pastor Belton received his doctorate degree in 2014.

Pastor Belton serves as PTO president and on the School Improvement Advisory Board at Cleveland Elementary School, at the Miracle Hill Rescue mission, on the Habitat for Humanity Board, REACH of the UPSTATE Board, and the Executive Board of the Spartanburg County Baptist Association. Pastor Belton is married to Sharon Elaine Lewis and they have four wonderful children, Daphne Qualls, Moesha, Antronethia, and Josiah Belton.

Wednesday, August 20th, the speaker will be Bishop Dr. J.J. Jackson, Pastor of Cornerstone Baptist Church in Spartanburg, S.C.

Pastor Jackson is a native of Chesterfield County, Virginia and the youngest of seven children. Dr. Jackson received his Bachelor or Arts and Bachelor of Theology degrees from the Richmond Virginia Seminary, Richmond, Virginia. In May 2000, he received his Master of Divinity from the Samuel Dewitt Proctor School of Theology at Virginia Union University in Richmond, Virginia. He graduated from Erskine Theological Seminary in Due West, S.C. with a Doctoral degree in Ministry in May 2006.

He is also the co-founder of Joy and Strength Ministries and Charles Jackson Ministries, LLC. He is the author of a new book “Outreach Theology; Transitioning the Traditional Church” which provides biblical application to connecting community and church. In April of 2011 Dr. Jackson was consecrated as Bishop.

The Cornerstone Church family has recently completed a multi-million dollar building project and moved into a new sanctuary, life center, and educational complex.

Youth Choir Ministry presents ‘Twilight Night’ Aug. 1

The Shady Grove Youth Choir Ministry will present “Twilight Night” on Friday, Aug. 1, 2014, at 7:00 p.m.

The public is invited to join in this fellowship program of praise, worship, and fun and participate through singing, dance mime and step. Refreshments will be served at 6:00 and the program will begin at 7:00 p.m. School supplies will be given away.

Groups of all ages are urged to come and participate.

Coordinators are Sisters Shakila Lattimore, Syreeta Greene, LaDonna Tate and Schlonda Hawk.

Junior Praise Dancers’ anniversary Aug. 3

The Shady Grove Baptist Church Junior Praise Dancers, “Anointed Praise,” will celebrate their first anniversary on Sunday, Aug. 3, 2014 at 4:00 p.m.

Other Praise Dance groups will be on program. Everyone is cordially invited to attend.

The group’s director is Sis. Joniqua Ingram; the assistant director is Sis. Eddikkia Smith.

Graduates honored during baccalaureate service

Shady Grove Baptist Church honored the 2014 graduates during a special Baccalaureate Service held recently. Students graduating from 5-Kindergarten, high school, and college were recognized and received Bibles and inspirational publications from the pastor and church family.

Church celebrates 133rd anniversary

The Shady Grove Baptist Church family will celebrate its 133rd anniversary on Sunday, May 25th, during the 11: a. m. worship service.

Pastor Lee Byers will deliver the anniversary sermon and the Shady Grove Mass Choir and other choirs will present special music. Each church member will rally with $133 for each year of glorious service and praise.

The church youth will present the church’s history via a PowerPoint presentation.

SGBC deacon to speak during Youth Day services

Deacon Al Phillips will speak during the Shady Grove Youth Day observance on Sunday, April 13, during the 11:00 a.m. worship service. The church youth will carry out the worship duties serving as Sunday School teachers, conducting the pulpit service, and fulfilling other Sunday church service responsibilities.

Phillips has served and evangelized through his work as a former police officer and narcotics agent, medical technician, and continues to be a personal fitness trainer, instructor, and bodybuilder. He has also served the community as a volunteer at Iron City Ministries in Blacksburg, Spartanburg Soup Kitchen, and as a mentor for elementary and middle school students. He is employed with Broad River Electric Coop and is the owner and operator of Total Definitions Health and Fitness Center in Blacksburg. He attended Anderson College (University), and served as a decorated United States Marine during Operation Desert Storm in Iraq.

Phillips is married to the former Hyacinth L. Jones and they have two daughters, Skyla Grace and Jaila Brianna Phillips. Al is the son of the late Albert Goodman and Shirley Goodman.

Pastoral anniversary March 16th

The Shady Grove Baptist Church family will honor the Rev. Lee Byers, Jr. and First Lady Esther Byers on their 8th Pastoral Anniversary during a special service on Sunday, March 16, 2014, at 2:00 p.m.

Speaking for this occasion will be the Rev. C. A. Wallace, pastor of Mt. Sinai Baptist Church in Gaffney. He will be accompanied by his choirs and congregation.

Rev. Byers serves as a member of the Executive Board of the Thickety Mountain Baptist Association, member of the Thickety Mountain Association Trustee Board, Vice President of the Association Ministerial Alliance, and an advisor to the Thickety Mountain Brotherhood Auxiliary. He is also a very active member and participant in all activities of the Cherokee County “Giving Back” Organization. He also received the Bachelor in Theology Degree from North Carolina College of Theology in spring of 2012.

Rev. Byers is married to the former Esther Montgomery of Gaffney, and they have five adult children and ten grandchildren.

The Gospel Choir will be providing special music during the morning worship service.
Everyone is cordially invited to be with us as we give God the praise and celebrate this momentous occasion. An anniversary luncheon will be provided immediately following the service.
